Pegasus
Granite sculpture by Laura Gardin Fraser
A winged horse springs from a mass of clouds, forelegs bent and head lifted in the upward rush. He soars on massive wings, bearing a rider lightly stretched along his back. The sculptor envisioned this group to symbolize the person born with vision and imagination, who is "floating along with Pegasus, symbol of inspiration, through the clouds and over the heights." The granite blocks from which the group is composed were set up in the gardens after they had been roughed out, and the carving was finished in place.
