The Making of a Grandmother
by: ‘Seven Eagles'

It was at a Winter Solstice, that this took place. We usually go to someone's home who has land that the Winter Solstice rites and rituals can take place. The Winter Solstice extends over a two day period, and people usually stay for the duration.

This is a good time, when people receive sacred names, commit themselves to spirit, bury old things....thoughts...feelings...and dead baggage of the previous year in the burial mounds, usually formed in the shape of the snake. For some it is a time of fasting, until the last night where a large supper is shared. It is a time that the Grandfathers and the Grandmothers meet together in one circle, sharing stories and ways of our ancestors with the general masses, and fellow searchers.

At this time, I was given a beautiful learning-stick by one of the Grandfathers, who is called Healing Waters. The learning-stick was decorated with many wonderful things: rattle snake skins, shark teeth, arrow heads, crystals, and even a prehistoric horse's tooth, to name just a few. Healing Waters and I took a walk...it was at night, and the crystals were sending all kinds of rainbow energy off of them, beautiful light patterns in the darkness. He told me some stories of how this learning-stick came into being, and of things he had learned with his Elder.

It was a close time we shared, one of wonderful stories. We returned to the circle, and the Grandfathers and Grandmothers spoke. At this meeting the Grandmothers asked very directly why I was not a Grandfather, to which the Grandfathers stuttered and murmured for a while to find words to share. They finally said that they were looking into this, that they felt the time was not right. The Grandmothers response was that it was not right for them to make me a Grandfather, so they made me a Grandmother, the first man to ever be made a Grandmother in their circle.

It was a honor to me, and somewhat insulting to the Grandfathers. Well, time has past, many years since then, I was never made a Grandfather in this circle, but was given the passage to the Grandfather circle in a beautiful vision, years after this meeting. I have found it doesn't matter to what titles or circles that man accepts you in, what is important is what and who you are spiritually. Through the years, I have been given many titles, accepted in many circles, and at the same time rejected by many.

The lesson is, you are who you are, you share with whoever wishes to receive, you receive from whoever wants to share with you, and you walk the path of spirit. Who is a Grandfather or a Grandmother, but one who is lower than a worm, yet higher than the eagle.
